This post is more like a Public Service Announcement. Short and to the point.
The fact that Trump is already to the point of using the DOJ to persecute perceived personal enemies indicates to me that there’s no way we can expect him to allow free and fair midterm elections.
Why?
It’s just so obvious:
Trump is already drinking deeply of the intoxicating nectar of uninhibited, unbridled power.
The entire Republican Party — the one controlling the United States Congress and the majority of the states — is belly-up in Trump’s lap having completely submitted to every single one of his illegal and/or unconstitutional actions and executive orders.
Trump has delegated (perhaps, more accurately, consigned) to the richest Muskreant in the world the right to seize control and dispose — apparently as he sees fit — of our nation’s unrivaled institutions and resources dedicated to serving the public good through education, science, health care, environmental protection, etc., etc.
SCOTUS is holding Trump’s hand and slow-walking him and all of us into the imperious, imperial presidency. There isn’t a technicality that John Roberts and his co-Injustices can’t find or make-up to enable Trump to steadily consolidate his power.
And there’s so much more being dissembled, destroyed, and desecrated — not to mention so many increasingly being denied and deprived of rights, detained, disrespected, and deported.
Trump already has plenty of election-interference mechanisms that he clumsily tried on Jan. 6 and there are many others he can deploy and/or simply create — including having the DOJ and/or other agents and agencies seize and/or suspend the elections and election results.
So, anyone thinking that we can just ‘tread political water’ and hope to solve our Tyrant Trump, imperial president problem in 2026, needs to think again.
What is to be done? I don’t know.
But this is what people who want to remain free need to be thinking about.
Jon, I think we can have free and fair elections. Susan Crawford, with the all powerful Elon Musk drowning the race with money managed a 10-point victory, winning the overwhelming majority of Wisconsin’s counties. This can be done. We have to stop treating this man as if he is a God.
Jon, this is a rather irresponsible thing to say, and it ignores the fact we've already had a bunch of special elections in red states that Democrats have won. We should have little concern about the 2026 midterms because states, not the national government, hold elections. Trump is close to powerless on this issue.
The more Dems say this about 2026 (others have made this point, too, unfortunately), the more we'll write off the midterms, which would be very, very bad. Winning a House and Senate majority next year must be our party's singular goal, and this doesn't help with that.
